What do I need to consider during pregnancy? Is there any financial support from the state?

Pregnancy

Are you pregnant? Then there are various things to do and organise so that

  • you and your child are and remain healthy during and after the birth
  • you don’t have to worry about finances
  • you do not have to work for your employer

Registration of the child

When your child is born, you can request the birth certificate directly at the hospital. You can obtain all other certificates and documents from the respective registry office. The first issue of a birth certificate is free of charge for children up to the age of 2, after which a fee is payable.

Various facilities also offer pregnancy courses and antenatal classes.
These include regional hospitals, adult education centres, parent-child centres and independent midwives.
Parent-child centres in Tyrol and midwives can be found under the following links:

You can find lots of information on these topics in the brochure “Unser Baby kommt – Begleitbroschuere zum Mutter-Kind-Pass”. The checklist (parents’ calendar) from the Tyrolean Chamber of Labour will help you to make sure you don’t forget any appointments (relating to the mother-child pass)

You can obtain further information on pregnancy and birth, the parent-child pass, parental leave and part-time parental leave from the following contact points:

Unintentionally pregnant?

If you are pregnant but do not want to keep the child, you can terminate a pregnancy in Austria within the first 3 months from the start of the pregnancy and after a consultation with a doctor. Under certain circumstances, this is also possible after 3 months.

You can get counselling help from family counselling centres, women’s counselling centres or women’s health centres.

Parent-child pass

The parent-child pass helps you to keep track of medical check-ups during pregnancy and in the first years of your child’s life and not to forget them. Make use of it! As a pregnant woman resident in Austria, you will receive a parent-child pass from your doctor.
You must complete all preventive medical check-ups for your child in order to receive the full childcare allowance from the state after the birth. The parent-child pass is currently still called the mother-child pass and is issued as a yellow booklet. In the next few years, however, the name will change and the pass will be available as a digital version.

Children: Financial support from the state

Family allowance

If you live with your child in the same household or pay money for the child and your centre of life is in Austria (including adopted, foster, step or grandchildren), you will receive family allowance. This is paid out automatically by the tax office. You will receive the money until your child is 18 years old. After that, you will continue to receive money under certain conditions until your child turns 24 (for example, if they are studying). The family allowance is staggered according to the age and number of your children and is paid monthly.

n all other cases, e.g. if you are moving to Austria from another country, an application for family allowance is required. This can be submitted electronically via FinanzOnline or by post to the tax office at your place of residence.

You can find more information and the family allowance form here.

Child tax credit

The child tax credit, just like the family allowance, is a tax relief for families with children. You automatically receive the child tax credit if you also receive family allowance.
More information here: Child tax credit

Childcare allowance

Childcare allowance provides financial support during the intensive phase of childcare and is paid out by your health insurance provider. There are 2 different types of childcare allowance: the income-related childcare allowance and the childcare allowance account.

The requirements for childcare allowance are

  • Entitlement to or receipt of family allowance for the child
  • Centre of vital interests of the applicant parent and the child in Austria
  • a shared household with the child
  • Carrying out the parent-child passport examinations
  • Compliance with the additional income limit of max. € 7,600.00 per year (as of 2023) 7.600,00 € pro Jahr (Stand 2023)

This applies to persons with legal residence in Austria after presentation of a recognition decision.
There is a difference here between persons entitled to asylum and persons entitled to subsidiary protection.
Further information can be found here: Childcare allowance

Income-dependent means that you receive 80% of your last income, up to a maximum of €69.83 per day (around €2,100.00 per month).

Information on family allowance/child deduction and childcare allowance is also available from the Chamber of Labour at: Allowance & Support

People with disabilities

What support will I receive as a disabled person?

Care allowance

The care allowance is an earmarked benefit. It is intended to partially cover the additional costs incurred due to the need for care. You can apply for care allowance at the Pension Insurance Institution PVA.

The disability The disability pass serves as proof of disability (regardless of the impairment). It is issued in 3 languages: English, French and German. In some cases, the pass is also recognised abroad. It does not entitle you to any financial benefits. However, you will receive discounts at some events on presentation of the disability pass.

Car park for the disabled

These parking spaces are recognisable by an additional sign with the disabled symbol. You may only park in such car parks with a disabled person’s badge. Place the pass in the car behind the windscreen. You can find general information on barrier-free parking here:
